About the Library

The Brikama Branch Library is one of the key regional branches of the National Library Service of The Gambia, established to promote literacy and provide equitable access to information resources across the country. Situated in the heart of Brikama, the library serves as a learning and research center for students, educators, and community members in the West Coast Region.

The facility offers a comprehensive range of information services, including lending, reference, and research support. In addition to its print collection, the library provides digital resources and computer access to support academic and professional research. It continues to play a crucial role in advancing literacy, education, and community development.

History and Development

The Brikama Branch Library was inaugurated in 1990 as part of the National Library Service’s decentralization program aimed at extending library facilities beyond the Greater Banjul Area. Initially operating with a modest collection and limited space, the branch has grown into a fully equipped public library serving thousands of users annually.

Over the years, the library has benefited from various national and international partnerships that have supported its expansion, modernization, and digitization initiatives. These improvements have enhanced service delivery, increased the availability of educational resources, and strengthened the library’s role as a key pillar of community learning in the region.

The Brikama Branch Library continues to align its operations with the National Library Service’s strategic objectives, focusing on improving literacy, supporting education, and providing inclusive access to knowledge for all citizens
